Chris Hergesheimer honoured for food security leadership

Chris Hergesheimer receives King Charles III Coronation Medal for leadership in advancing food security.

We’re thrilled to announce that Dr. Chris Hergesheimer, SCCSS Food Programs Lead, has received the King Charles III Coronation Medal, a national honour recognizing Canadians who have made significant contributions to their communities, their country, or the world.

The medal was formally presented at a community gathering at the Seaside Centre on June 9 by Katie Orr, Provincial Manager, National Standards at Food Banks BC. Family, volunteers, friends, and SCCSS staff were in attendance to celebrate the occasion and honour Chris’s leadership in transforming food security efforts on the Sunshine Coast.

Chris was nominated by Food Banks BC and Food Banks Canada in the Community Service and Philanthropy category for his decades of work in food sovereignty - locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally - and for his bold vision and innovation at SCCSS. Since joining the organization, Chris has led the shift from a traditional food bank model to a community-led food security approach - one that treats food as a human right and centres dignity, inclusion, and connection.

Under his leadership, initiatives like the Affordable Market (a pay-what-you-can produce market), the Fresh Fruit Fund, and employment-linked garden projects have helped reduce stigma, increase access to healthy food, and create inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome and respected.

“Chris’s work is changing lives,” said Carey Rumba, Program Manager for Community Services. “He’s helped build a food program rooted in community - where people are known by name, where their stories matter, and where food becomes a tool for health, belonging, and empowerment.”

Congratulations, Chris, on this well-earned recognition. We’re proud to stand with you in building a more just and connected community.
