SCCSS Uses Food to Build Health, Community

In the fall of 2017, Sunshine Coast Community Services Society applied and was accepted into the Good Food Organizations (GFO) program offered by Community Food Centres Canada. In doing so, our organization became one of over 100 Good Food Organization members across Canada working toward a healthy and fair food system.

A project of Community Food Centres Canada, the Good Food Organizations program aims to increase, connect and support community food security organizations striving to offer healthy and dignified food programs in their communities.

What does this mean for SCCSS?
As a GFO, SCCSS is offered resources, customized training, grants, and chances to network and promote shared priorities. By working together through a set of shared principles, the Good Food Organizations program connects like-minded organizations around the country in a collective commitment to achieving a healthy and fair food system.

With SCCSS dedicated to developing and implementing an organizational Food Security Strategy, we feel that becoming a good food organization will help move us forward.

Almost all of the 35 programs offered by SCCSS uses food in one way or another and we want to use  food as a vehicle to improve the lives of our participants and our community. We can do this through growing, cooking, learning, encouraging healthy options and using food to start conversations where trust and relationships can be built. We will use food to build health and community.
