Mental Health Awareness Week on the Coast (May 6 - 12, 2018)
Mental Health Awareness Week is May 6 - 12, 2018 on the Sunshine Coast. From Youth in Transition to Arrowhead Clubhouse, several SCCSS programs will be participating in this important week to raise the awareness of mental health.
Every May for the last 66 years, Canadians in communities, schools, workplaces and the House of Commons have rallied around Mental Health Week.
This year, #GetLoud about what mental health really means.
Mental Health is more than mental illness. It is more than being happy all the time. It is being comfortable with who you are and finding balance in your world. It's about managing the highs and lows. It's about coping with the struggle and celebrating the triumphs. It's about knowing there are resources for help and that you are not alone.
In more than 300 communities across British Columbia organizations and individuals will be hosting awareness events. These events are vitally important to breaking down the stigma that surrounds mental illness and promoting mental wellbeing. The great news is attitudes are changing and research suggests "70% believe attitudes about mental health issues have changed for the better since 5 years ago" (source: mentalhealthweek.ca).
Sunshine Coast Community Services Society programs will be participating in programs and hosting a few of their own to help boost mental health awareness on the Sunshine Coast. Here are a few of the events planned:
