Children
Who Witness Abuse
Children Who Witness Abuse is a program designed to support children
through the healing process after experiencing abuse or violence,
and is a powerful tool to help boys and girls develop skills to
break the cycle of abuse. The counsellor has 10 to 12 families with
one or more children actively involved in the program. There is
currently a waiting list of 4 to 6 families and the wait is approximately
three months. If a family calls for service and is not connected
with any other program, the counsellor will see them immediately
to help develop a plan for support.

Thyme
Second Stage Program
Since 1995 Thyme Second Stage Program has provided short-term housing,
support, advocacy, and counselling for women and their children,
as well as individual women who have experienced abuse and who need
additional support beyond a first stage transition house.
With a grant from the Vancouver Sun Children's Fund, donations from
individuals, local businesses and volunteers, a well-built, well-designed
play area has been installed that can offer children in a range
of age groups the chance to have fun, and get plenty of exercise
and fresh air in a safe environment.

Women’s
Counselling Service
Since 1993 the Women's Counselling Service has been providing counselling
free of charge to women (aged 19 and over) who have felt the impact
of abuse. Abuse may take many forms including physical, sexual,
or emotional. The abuse may be happening now, or it may have happened
years ago. Whenever it happened and whatever form it takes, it often
has an impact on women’s lives in a number of ways.
This counselling helps women to recover from the harm they have
experienced and reclaim healthy satisfying lives by:
understanding how abuse works
exploring the impact it has had
identifying and using existing strengths and skills
learning new skills and resources
building supportive relationships and communities.
The counselling service works with women who seek service to identify
counselling goals and service options. Most of the counselling is
provided individually on a short or long term basis, depending on
the needs of the woman seeking service. When resources are available
we facilitate time limited support groups.
Counselling is offered in the Sechelt office of Community Services,
and also in Gibsons at Farnham Family Place.
